Q: Can I put make-up on while on The Obagi NU-DERM System?
A: Yes, although it is not advised, particularly in the Very Aggressive or Moderately
Aggressive Approaches. Always use water based, oil-free makeup. The skin will still
appear flaky.
Q: Can I have activity in the sun while I am on the Obagi NU-DERM System?
A: Yes, if you use the Sunfader (SPF 15), Healthy Skin Protection (SPF 35) or Sun Shield (SPF
50) and reduce unnecessary, prolonged sun exposure. Avoid the sun from I0am-2pm, wear
protective clothing and reapply SPF every 60 - 90 minutes.
Q: Can I wax my upper lip or face while on The Obagi NU-DERM System?
A: Yes, but use cold wax. It is safer than hot wax which can strip the skin. Stop using Retin-
A 4-5 days before the waxing process.
Q: I am actively trying to become pregnant or I am pregnant what should I do?
A: You should check with your OB/GYN who will most likely suggest waiting until after
your pregnancy and completion of lactation to go on the full program. You could use the
cleanser, toner and sunscreens during pregnancy and lactation.
Q: My skin is red, dry and peeling. Am I allergic to the products?
A: The type of reactions to the creams listed above is not an allergy. These reactions are
normal and indicate the efficacy of the creams on the skin. This is part of renewal before
building tolerance.
Q: After the eyelids, the most sensitive area is around the mouth. Why?
A: This is due to frequent wetting around the mouth and excessive movement in that area.
Use Action Moisturizer, Tolereen, and /or Eye Cream for comfort if necessary.
Q: The skin on my neck and chest is more sensitive than the skin on my face. What
should I do?
A: Start with a slower approach (twice a week), then work up as your skin gains
tolerance.
Q: My skin looks worse after 2-3 weeks of using the creams. What is going on?
A: Your skin problems usually will appear worse during the first 6 weeks, especially acne,
spots, and sun damage. This is temporary and is a part of the skin renewal process. Your
skin will look much better when the old skin layers are exfoliated and are replaced by new,
healthy ones.
Q: The Very Aggressive Approach is too much for me. Will I get the same benefit from
a milder approach?
A: Stimulation to renew skin is best with the Very Aggressive Approach. Correction of the
skin surface can be done mildly, except when dealing with pigmentation problems.
Tolerance will build up in about six weeks with the Very Aggressive Approach, so tough
it out if possible.
Q: Do the mild and normal approaches provide the same benefits as the more
aggressive and very aggressive approaches in the long run?
A: All approaches will improve your skin, but the aggressive approaches will produce more
collagen and elastin. They are more effective in reversing the aging process and producing
firmer skin.
Q: Can I use products other than the recommended ones during the program?
A: Because all Obagi NU-DERM products have a compatible base which does not interfere
with and enhances the active ingredients, other products should not be used. You may
wish to instruct the patient that other products may be used in areas not being treated with
the Obagi NU-DERM TM System.
Q: Can I use Retin-A gel or the .025 % or .05% Retin-A creams?
A: Retin-A gel is not as effective as the cream. The .1% cream should always be used for the
best results. In cases of thin, very sensitive skin, the weaker concentration .05% Retin-A
cream can be used to build tolerance until the .1% cream can be used.
Q: Should I use these creams forever?
A: Yes, if you are interested in keeping your skin in good shape forever. By following the
Maintenance Approach, sunscreens, and approved cosmetics, you can keep your skin in
its best condition indefinitely. With the occasional "Shock Treatment" application, you
can keep your skin looking younger.
